The Conference of Birds - Gerard O'Brien Artworks
The Works
Gerard O’Brien is the artist and co-designer for the ‘Conference of Birds’ project with the
Elders and Floating World Productions. In keeping with the theme of the production, he
has produced a series of pencil (graphite and colour) drawings, A4 in size, of Irish
endangered birds – those on the Red List. The birds are often placed at the edge of the
paper as if only glimpsed – perhaps we only have glimpses of many of these species left.
His aim in making these works was twofold, they both celebrate the diversity and richness
of these species while the sheer number of drawings (over fifty) is a stark reminder of the
seriousness of situation we face.
The Artist
Gerard is a visual artist and Chartered Member of the Landscape Institute (UK). He works
in drawing and video. His work is predominantly concerned with landscapes – built and
unbuilt, and natural history. He has degrees in Zoology, Landscape Architecture and Fine
Art and his work reflects his varied studies. There is a blurring of boundaries in his work
between design and fine art. His last exhibition was the group MA show ‘Waystation’ in the
Complex in 2024.
