The Playboy of the Western World
Zephyr Theatre proudly presents The Playboy of the Western World – A Comedy in Three Acts by J.M. Synge. Set in a rural village near the coast of Mayo, this classic Irish drama follows the journey of Christy Mahon as he seeks refuge from the law. A mysterious stranger claiming he killed his father, Christy expects to be met with handcuffs. Instead he bewitches the townsfolk and catches the eye of Pegeen Mike with his thrilling story. Watch as the everyday lives of the small community are disrupted and thrown into turmoil as they transform Christy from outsider to folk hero.
Director Zia Basbaum uses her combined practice in political theatre and embodiment practices to explore feelings of identity, belonging, and public scrutiny. Join Zephyr Theatre as they bring this play to life and investigate what is required for self-invention and what is sacrificed along the way.
Approaching the 120th anniversary of the Playboy Riots, this production revisits the play’s central question: how does a community decide who deserves admiration, exclusion, or condemnation?
