A View From The Bridge
Arthur Miller’s A View from the Bridge stands as one of the great modern dramas of the 20th century: a searing exploration of desire, betrayal, and moral reckoning set within the close-knit Italian-American community of 1950s Brooklyn.
Miller, one of the most decorated and influential playwrights in modern theatre, first staged this play in 1955. More relevant today than ever, the play focuses on the flux of immigration to New York and the relationships built between new generation New Yorkers and their families back in their mother lands.
At its centre are Eddie and Beatrice, a hard-working longshoreman and his wife, who together raise their niece, for whom Eddie has complicated feelings, and struggles to see her grown up and ready to leave home.
As Miller himself observed, A View from the Bridge was his attempt “to write a tragedy in the modern sense,” one rooted not in kings or heroes, but in ordinary lives destroyed by forces they barely understand. Over time, critics have increasingly recognised A View from the Bridge as one of Miller’s finest achievements:
“A tragedy of classical proportions, written with fierce intensity and moral clarity” (New York Times)
“Uncompromising, devastating, and ultimately unforgettable — a masterpiece of moral drama” (The Guardian)
“An intensely absorbing drama, sure of itself every step of the way. It makes no false moves, wastes no time and has the beauty that comes from directness and simplicity” (New York Daily News, 1955)
