Soldier Field

Soldier Field tells the story of four Ireland players and eight of their fans as they make their way to Chicago with history in mind. Ireland are set to play the world champion All Blacks, a side they have not beaten in 28 matches, stretched over 109 years.

The players and fans have all been left reeling by the death of Munster and Ireland legend, Anthony ‘Axel’ Foley, only four weeks before. Faced with a daunting foe and odds stacked against them, the players and fans must come together to pay a fitting tribute to one of their own.

Soldier Field was first staged at The dlr Mill Theatre in Dublin, in 2019, before returning to the stage (at The Moat and Lime Tree theatres) for well-received and sold-out performances.

“Soldier Field is an amazing play that truly encapsulates the emotion surrounding Ireland’s historic first-time win over New Zealand in Chicago in 2016, a month after the loss of my brother. It powerfully captures the intensity, dedication, and spirit of the players, while beautifully connecting with the “16th man” – the fans. The play weaves together the stories, emotions, and hard work, painting a rich portrait of that iconic moment. Even if one didn’t know rugby, the depth of the storytelling makes it an experience of pure enjoyment and understanding.” – Orla Foley
