No Romance: A Desperate Business

Carmel and Joe, arrive early to the funeral home, where Joe’s recently departed mother is laid out.  After 24 years of marriage, Carmel and Joe think they know everything about each other. But do they? After revelations, reflections and speculations, they uncover secrets and lies including some fantasies that have remained well hidden!    And the big question …. is privacy an entitlement or an illusion?

No Romance, a play in three acts, was originally staged at the Abbey’s Peacock Theatre in 2011.
No Romance: A Desperate Business is the second act and serves as a meditation on how marriage is shaped by so many forces outside of love.   Winner of the 2012 Stewart Parker Trust Award for New Writing.
“Great comedy, keen sympathy, and lingering poignancy” -The Irish Times
