The Conference of Birds

The Conference of Birds (COB 2).

Birds on the brink of extinction take to the stage hoping the humans will look up and cherish their song before it’s too late.
An intergenerational performance of theatre, music and visual art by participatory arts group The Elders in collaboration with a flock of multi-disciplinary artists and National Concert Hall’s Cór na Nóg. A gathering of wings, voices, and stories rooted in the lives of birds from Ireland’s Red List of Birds of Conservation Concern.
The work invites us to step briefly into another way of being, of moving, calling, and listening. Research, myth, theatre, movement, animation, visual art, music, and live performance are woven together to give voice to birds and their fragile futures.
This performance is accompanied by an exhibition of all Ireland’s critically endangered birds by Gerard O’Brien running at dlr Mill from April 19th – June 13th .
Building on Conference of Birds (COB 1), first performed in May, this new iteration deepens the work as a shared ritual entangling performers with birds, bringing elders and children, artists and audiences together through sound and movement, and continues its invitation to listen, to care, and to imagine otherwise.
Kindly funded by Arts Council Ireland Participatory Arts Award and supported by dlr Mill Theatre
The Elders are an older adult participatory arts group who have been creating original work since 2018. They have received many funding awards from Arts Council Ireland, DLRCOCO, Creative Ireland and Create. The group have performed theatre in parks, forests, studios, theatres and streets always in collaboration with a host of diverse professional artists. The focus is on honouring the Elder in society, raising their creative voices and often making work that intersects with ecology and climate
