A Christmas Carol – Live Radio Play

In 1938, Orson Welles produced, directed and starred in a CBS radio production of ‘A Christmas Carol’ by Charles Dickens. This December, Sandyford Little Theatre are proud to present a live re-enactment of this famous Welles’ radio show, which was part of The Campbell Playhouse series, also incorporating sound effects and radio advertisements from the time.

For his show, which was only a few months after his renowned Halloween broadcast of War of the Worlds, Welles was fortunate to be able to secure Lionel Barrymore for the part of Ebenezer Scrooge, a role that he had come to embody. “I seem to shrink and an unnatural meanness of disposition comes over me,” said Barrymore.

Our ‘radio show’ starts at 8pm, and our actors will be playing all the parts from Welles to Barrymore (Scrooge) to the three Christmas ghosts. So come along and be transported back in time to the golden age of radio, and learn the true meaning of Christmas with old Ebenezer himself!
